Buffalo National River
Hike down Tomahawk Creek to the Buffalo National River with crappy bluff action
8/3/19
It was Saturday morning. Breakfast was had at Ihop and was of reasonable quality. It was a mostly cloudy morning with sporadic drizzle on the drive up. At 5:50 with 73° I entered the shallow flow of Tomahawk Creek, just east of Gilbert. As the light slowly revealed the features of the stream, I listened to the usual sounds of dawn. My rod was made ready. My first cast produced a smallmouth of miniature proportions...as did my second. Then my line became entangled upon itself. After repair, I continued my wading of the creek towards the Buffalo. The distance was not far. The river was lovely, but alas...a throng of campers was noted just downstream of my position. I was not alone. Later, skunks would be shot down at them from the bluffs with my skunk bazooka. Movement was made upstream instead. More fishing and exploring occurred here. A few more lunker bass were pulled to shore. A little after eight, my fishing ended. It was time to move on.
Without too much difficulty, the ridge on the north side of the river was mounted. The search for bluff action had begun. Occasional breaks in the forest opened up to views of the river and its surrounding valley. Bluff action was of poor quality. By 10:00 my search ended with no results. I headed back and by 10:50 with 79°, the low water bridge that marked my origin was before me. This hike was about 4 miles in distance. Elevation gain?...who gives a shit.
