Big Piney Creek
Hike to some bluffs above Big Piney Creek near Hurricane Creek
4/1/21
The Big Piney is the larger of two creeks, the smaller being the Little Piney. They both originate within the Ozark National Forest and merge together as one a few miles north of the Arkansas River. Along the way, these streams flow through vast woodlands and shrubberies. The Big Piney valley holds much beauty and displays that freely along its length. This hike began just upstream from the confluence of Hurricane Creek on the west side of the creek. Breakfast was served at Waffle House in Russellville just prior to entry into the forest. At 5:30, the morning was dark, skies were clear with a temp of 35°. A downward angle was taken to find the bluff line of my desire. It was traced to the north until a suitable location was obtained. At this spot, much grandeur was observed as the sun rose just after 7:00. The pastoral glen below was peaceful with only the sounds of the river and an occasional goose call.
After viewing all that was before me, my path continued north until the ridge turned back up above Looper Hollow. Lunch was eaten on another rocky promontory and much relaxing occurred at this time. Then, it was back up the slope to the parking area that was chosen earlier. At 11:10 with 55°, my short journey ended.
