Hike in the Fern Creek Gorge with fern upon boulder action
11/1/21
Someone in the not so distant past thought that a small boulder strewn area such as this one would be well served if given a cute name like Fern Gully. This name stuck. This shallow valley seems much more gorge like than a gully, so I hereby rename it to Fern Creek Gorge. I made a loop around this pine choked terrain and traced Fern Creek from its confluence upstream to narrowness. The immediate valley has hardwoods to some extent but once above the bluff line the trees quickly are dominated by pine trees. The lower end of the gorge is steep and boulder filled with stretches of bedrock action. The upper end is shallow and contains huge boulders, many larger than most found in Arkansas. The creek had a low flow but was of decent beauty. The most impressive aspect of Fern Creek is the low bluff and huge boulder combo. This little valley is pretty unique. It is easy to access so it gets too much use. This will be its downfall, as with other locales such as Hawksbill Crag and The Glory Hole. I entered at 5:15 a.m. with 48° and clear skies. I exited at 10:50 with 53° and mostly cloudy skies. It began to lightly rain not long after departure. My walk covered 5 miles.
