Cossatot River
Whitewater kayaking on the Cossatot River in August
8/9/23
Paddling whitewater in August is unusual, but it happens. Heavy rains had the river above 8 feet, so I packed and drove 180 miles to catch the already falling river. Camping occurred at the Sand Bar campground. After a family left, the site was all mine. My boat was stashed at the put in. I rose early and hiked the 2 plus miles via the corridor trail. At 6:30 with 75° and very little light, my kayak was moving downstream. Two herons rose from the shore and flew low in the same direction as me. It was quite cloudy. The flow was adequate at 3.7 feet. At this level the rocks are exposed. I prefer around 5.0 feet. All went well well and the run was thoroughly enjoyed. My exit from the river was made at 8:00 with 76°.
