Owens MountainOwens Mountain hike of early fall or late summer, Ozark National Forest
9/28/19
In the Ozark National Forest there are many mountains. Within the Big Creek watershed lies one of those mountains. This one just happens to be named after the notorious Jim Bob Owens. Jim Bob was best known for his country sausage, which he made fresh daily out back of his cabin right up on top of the ridge that bears his name. Jim Bob loved his hogs. He especially loved eatin his hogs. He ate his hogs ever damned day of the week...savin fer Sunday. For the lord said "eat ye no foods made up mostly of hogs on my day of no relaxation...lest ye perish". Jim Bob obeyed all rules...especially those laid out in the wholly book...of hog action. Thank you Jim Bob for this mountain of pork legend.
After breakfast at Denny's in Russellville, I went to the mountain, and mounted it. I was hiking by 5:30 with 73° and mostly clear skies. I found this location to be of fair quality. For other hikes in the area see Wolf Creek and Ricketts Mountain. Both hikes are top notch accounts filled with both manly and deadly action. The sunrise was witnessed from the northernmost point of the upper bluff line. This spot can be accessed on foot, and sadly, by motorized vehicular unit. Due to the extremely thick and brushy nature of the forest here, no more bluffs were explored. My car was arrived back to at 8:40 with 78°. The mileage was around 1.6 miles.
